Cathedral to be purified after sex
An Italian cathedral will have to be purified after a couple of goth rock fans had sex in a confession box.
The cathedral, in the northern city of Cesena, is no longer considered fit as a place of worship and requires a special Mass to restore its sanctity, church officials said.
The act which desecrated the church took place during a seven o'clock service on Saturday morning.
A parishioner heard ''rustling and groaning'' coming from the box and called the Carabinieri, who whisked the curtains aside to find the pair of goths engaged in oral sex.
''We're atheists. Having sex in church is the same as doing it anywhere else,'' said the pair, aged 31 and 32.
Cesena Archbishop Antonio Lanfranchi, who has scheduled a 'reparatory' service for Friday, described the couple's act as ''an outrage of notable proportions which bespeaks unutterable squalor and a complete lack of respect towards other people''.

If they are atheists, what were they doing in church during service?

Well, I would find it somewhat amusing , and Very italian, IF they were just kids doing what Italians love to do...I am agnostic, and to me, this IS my belief system, and if I had a designated place of worship I would be very angry for someone to defile it delibertly to make a very rude statment, especially given the time of the act. God only knows, if some Goth rebell bratts defiled my cupboard this way , sacred or not, , I'd want it fumigated , no matter what time they did it!

I understand that this could be offensive to most christians, however they put the religious aspect all over our secular world, From the government, to the liquor stores(in the states, I dont know what its like across the way). Some atheist are just as offended when they are followed down the street and told that they will go to hell.
Most atheist wont go fuck in a confesional, but most will chuckle at it.
Too Far
This seems like one of those 'cut your nose off to spite your face' acts. I have the deepest respect for those of any belief system and YES, ATHEISM IS A BELIEF SYSTEM. This reminds me somewhat of the 'Darwin Fish." Each of us holds something, perhaps too many things, sacred. When one attempts to make their point by abusing cherished objects or practices they weaken their point to nothingness. "Because I can," is the poorest of justifications.

Atheism isn't supposed to be a belief system. It is, by nature, a lack of any belief system. (belief in science is not seen as an actual belief, but reality, intelligence). That's not to say that some, like Richard Dawkins, have turned it into a movement and now ironically have an atheist religion of sorts going. He got mean all the sudden, didn't he?
I am an atheist but I would never go out of my way to offend anyone else's religion. I am a normal, rational human being. I believe in the power of science and human ingenuity, not in cosmic deities and so fourth. I can see humor in the idea of having sex in a church, but actually following through with the idea crosses the line. Atheism for me is not to deny that I have morality, but to understand my ingrained, human morality. The problem here is not that these people are atheists. The problem is that they had sex in a church. It's just mean.

What lame reasoning that 'they can have sex anywhere because they are atheists'. Why give the church that respect when most "Christians" do not give the same. I am an Atheist living in the bible belt of America. I used to be very civil and friendly with them but fuck that they can all rot. When they die I hope the pearly gate is some guy jerking off on their corpses.
